Classical Christian School

Kennah will be starting Kindergarten(!) in the fall at Cornerstone Christian Academy. When we tell people that it is a Classical Christian school, we get a lot of puzzled looks. "What does that mean?" they ask.

I didn't know what it was, either. Until a few years ago. I had been made aware of Classical Christian Schools through the ministry of R.C. Sproul. Here's a very brief summary of what classical education is about:

Classical education trains the mind, using a three-step process called the trivium to give each child the tools of learning:
  • In the early grades, students absorb facts and lay the foundation for further study (Grammar).
  • In the middle grades, they learn to think logically through arguments (Logic).
  • In the high school years, they learn to express themselves effectively using the written and spoken word (Rhetoric).
Classical Christian education provides students with the tools of learning for a lifetime of Christ-centered thinking. Students apply Biblical principles to every academic area: math, science, art, music, literature, and history.

A more detailed description of classical education can be found here.

As our kids started to approach school-age, Kristina and I decided that our kids would not attend public school. Not that there's anything wrong with that... we just knew public education didn't fit our family's goals and ideals. Almost two years ago, we did some work for Providence Classical School in Spring, TX. I was able to meet the headmaster, visit the school, and learn more about classical education. I was very impressed -- that sealed the deal for us -- I knew Classical education was the right choice for our family.
