San Diego Trip - Day 2 (San Diego Zoo)
On Sunday morning, June 24th we woke up and began our day by eating a hearty breakfast of pop-tarts in our room. DoubleTree is kind enough to include a two-cup Wolfgang Puck coffee pod maker in the room so I made myself a cup. Kristina packed up all of our stuff because we planned on changing rooms. As we were leaving to go to the zoo, I stopped by the front desk and reminded them of the room change. They said they would move all of our belongings for us while we were gone. How kind.
We headed south on I-5 and followed the signs to the zoo. (Click here to see our zoo photos.) We were concerned that it might be too cool for us that day, but those fears were soon allayed. It turned out to be pretty warm, probably the warmest day of our entire trip. We purchased our tickets, entered the zoo and promptly headed for the double decker bus tour. Of course, we had to get on the upper level of the bus. It's amazing how large the San Diego zoo is. And hilly!
Kolton quickly grew bored of seeing all the animals. If we tried to point out an animal, he would wave his hands dismissively and say "Yeah, I see it" without even looking.
After the bus tour, we wandered the zoo. Some of our favorites were the Pandas, the monkeys and gorillas. We ate lunch at one of the restaurants then we looked at the snakes and reptiles which the kids seemed to enjoy. Next it was time for what would be the kid's favorite activities -- the sky tram.
The SD Zoo even has characters. We only saw one but the Koala was very excited to see Kennah and Kolton.
Before we left, we promised the kids they could get a souvenir. Kolton got some candy, and Kennah spent an inordinate amount of time deciding what to get. She finally settled on a keychain that has some weird looking bug encased in plastic.
We headed back to the Doubletree and found they had moved some of our bags to our new room, but left most of it. Not sure why. So we gathered up our belongings from the old room and moved to the new room. Then we headed out to a local pizza place called Oggi's (official pizza chain of the San Diego Chargers, Padres, and the Del Mar race track!) for dinner. While eating dinner, Kristina swore that Larry Gatlin was there. He sure looked like a young version of him.
After dinner, we headed back, got ready for bed and prepared for our next day at SeaWorld!!
