The. Longest. Fireworks. Display. Ever.
We spent July 4th in Sierra Vista, AZ. Kolton had been staying with his Uncle Curby and Aunt Stephanie for several days, and it was time to get him back! So we (Kerry, Kristina and Kennah) drove from Tucson to Sierra Vista to spend the day, celebrate July 4th, celebrate Kennah's 5th birthday (July 7th), and watch the local fireworks show.
We arrived about 1:30 pm and were very happy to see our little boy! He had been there for 4 nights / 5 days! Curby & Stephanie were kind enough to extend their hospitality even further by allowing Kristina and I to go to the movies and see Batman Begins while they kept the kids. Awesome movie!!!
After the movie, we went back to the apartment to eat burgers, hot dogs, chips, baked beans and more. Stephanie (and Kolton) had spent the last several days creating the most elaborate birthday cake for Kennah! It was in the shape of a swimming pool and was incredibly cute. I'll post a photo later.
Then it was time to go to the local park and watch fireworks. Curby and Stephanie told us the display there was pretty impressive the year before. I've seen plenty of firework shows in my lifetime, but this one wins the prize for the longest fireworks display I've ever seen. We arrived at the park around 7:30 pm as it was beginning to get dark. We picked out a spot in the grass and placed our chairs and blankets. By the time the sun went down at 8:15, Kennah was cold! Kristina and I were loving it -- it was cool and breezy, and not a mosquito in sight!! It was a stark contrast to hot, sweaty and mosquito-ridden fireworks display we endured last year!
Well, at 8:30 pm, the firework show started. And it kept going. And going. And going. I checked my watch around 8:50 pm. Surely it must be time for the "grand finale.". No... still more fireworks, but no finale. 9:00 pm. and the show continues. 9:10 pm. Is this the finale? No, still not enough. At 9:15 pm, the sky erupts with a serious firework finale!!! And it was truly over. A 45-minute firework show!!! We couldn't believe it. Definitely impressive.
The experience was enhanced by a group of soldiers who were sitting a couple of yards behind us. They were sometimes crude, but very humorous.
